William Hill unveiled as official betting partner of the Incestec Derby Festival
Epsom Downs Racecourse and William Hill today announced a groundbreaking Official Betting Partnership for the Investec Derby Festival. The five-year agreement provides a platform to build betting revenues and increase interest from the betting community in the lead-up to the event.
The long-term deal is the result of continued dialogue between Epsom Downs and William Hill following the 2010 Investec Derby Festival. More than 125,000 people attended Investec Derby Day last year, which included the most watched flat race on British television, the Investec Derby.
The partnership that unites the Greatest flat race in the world and The Home of Betting covers a multi-channel betting platform, including the UK’s largest high-street shop estate, online via www.williamhill.com, via a dedicated new microsite www.theroadtothederby.co.uk and mobile via Epsom Downs new iPhone App.
The partnership will be activated via online, mobile and print executions, with particular attention being paid to both parties social media and marketing in William Hill’s shops, including highly-coveted window space.
Rupert Trevelyan, Managing Director of Epsom Downs Racecourse, said:
“We are delighted to partner with William Hill to introduce arguably the most innovative betting platform seen in British racing. With the world’s greatest flat race, the Investec Derby, and exciting races including the Investec Oaks, Coronation Cup and Dash, the Investec Derby Festival provides plenty of opportunities for this partnership to build on.”
“William Hill’s markets itself as ‘The Home of Betting’ and as the world’s biggest bookmaker including the UK’s largest high street shop estate, we believe they are the right partner to help promote the Investec Derby Festival, including the lead-up to its feature races and trials in years to come.”
Ralph Topping, Chief Executive of William Hill, commented:
“We have been impressed with Epsom’s intent to work together in partnership to grow betting revenues around the Investec Derby Festival. The Derby is a historical and much-loved event and it deserves its mantle as the uppermost of all Flat races within the calendar. We are confident that over time this commercial arrangement will see us drive turnover upwards, to provide even greater returns for Racing and punters.’’
Simon Bazalgette, Group Chief Executive of The Jockey Club, said:
“I’m delighted with this new commercial partnership. Ralph Topping voiced constructive concerns after last year’s Investec Derby, but the Epsom team sat down with William Hill, looked together at how we can grow betting revenues around the event and forged this partnership.
“It is an example of what can be achieved through constructive dialogue between racing and betting organisations, and we will be working hard to ensure it delivers the results both parties are looking for.”
The Road to the Derby micro-site
The partnership between Epsom Downs and William Hill sees the introduction of The Road to the Derby micro-site (http://www.theroadtothederby.co.uk), designed to provide punters with all the information they require about the Investec Derby Festival. The website features exclusive news, footage and insight into the Investec Derby and its lead-up trial races along with footage from the Investec Oaks and its trials; all provided by Racing UK.
The new site aims to deliver a narrative for the Investec Derby Festival throughout the Flat season across the event itself and will monitor two-year old activity leading up to the following year’s renewal.
Pioneering new App
The partnership includes exclusive ‘in-App betting’ with William Hill via Epsom Downs’ recently-launched App for iPhone. In addition to offering consumers the opportunity to place bets, the Epsom Downs racecourse App provides event information, racecards, latest odds and race results. The App is available through Apple’s App Store by searching for ‘Epsom Downs Racecourse’.
